Under the term classical guitar, we understand three different concepts about the guitar: a type of music, a type of guitar and a style of playing. The type of music is that which were composed before the modern time that we know today. Classical music is an umbrella term for any music composed before the 20th century. Under classical music you also get different styles; Rococo, Baroque, Classic, Romantic, Modern.
The type of guitar used for classical music, is an acoustic guitar with nylon strings. The style of playing is picking the strings with the fingertips or nails. One can always spot a classical guitarist by their nails: the left hand nails are cut short and the right hand nails are longer. Classical guitarists play a guitar right handed when they are left handed. This is not to punish them, but because it is easier to read music that way. Besides, you don’t get a left handed piano, flute or violin, do you?
