How To Buy A Guitar For Beginners
It is exciting to start guitar lessons. It is like an adventure. Maybe you are hoping to become a great musician like Eric Clapton, Hal Lennard or Jimi Hendrix. But first things first: How to buy a guitar for beginners? Where do you start? There are many different types of guitars. Before you buy a guitar, you need to decide how you want to play by reading Best Online Guitar Lessons Beginners or looking at someone who is already playing. Look at pictures of them playing and look at the style of guitar. Then compare the style with one of the pictures below and you’ll know which guitar to purchase.
Different types of acoustic guitar
Nylon String Acoustic Guitar

A nylon string acoustic guitar is a great guitar to get started with. When you start practicing guitar, your left hand fingers that press down on the strings develop little calluses on them. With a nylon string guitar, this isn’t so bad. With a steel string guitar, your fingers can bleed sometimes until you get used to playing.
A nylon string guitar is also the best guitar if you want to play a more classical style of guitar. Instead of a pick, you can pluck the strings with your fingers.
Steel String Acoustic Guitar

This kind of guitar plays louder and sounds brighter. It is also very versatile because it makes any style sound good: Rock, Jazz, Folk, they all sound good. They make sure you work hard and the steel strings help you develop hard calluses on your fingertips.
This seems to be the obvious choice if you want to play styles other than classical.
Different types of electric guitars

A lot of students want to go straight to the electric guitar. They are such fantastic great fun! There’s just one big drawback: They are very loud and can upset the neighbors. Of course you need an amplifier to hear it properly. It is also a bit easier to play than the acoustic guitar. Hey, if you want to be the god of rock you have to look like one and sound like one, right?
The Solid Body Electric Guitar is the most common type of electric guitar. Solid means that there are no sound holes that create the sound, but that it is an entirely electric generated sound.
You also get a semi-acoustic electric guitar, which has a hollow body. This means that the guitar has a much warmer sound than the solid.
How to pick the right guitar
Each guitar has its good points, and each guitar has its bad points. The classical guitar will sound really good with a soft mellow tone. If you get one, get a really good one, as they mature with age – like red wine.
The steel string guitar has a loud, bright sound, and will be a good first guitar to start on. You can even buy one with a thin neck that you can play like an electric guitar.
If you still would rather go with an electric guitar as your first guitar, make sure that it is also a really good one that feels just right in your hands.
Even though I try to convince my students to buy the nylon string “classical” type of guitar, they mostly go for the steel string acoustic guitar. They like the fact that it has a louder, more clear sound.
Different Size Guitars
If you have children and they want to play guitar, start them off with a half or three quarter size guitar. Half size is roughly right for ages 4 – 9 and a three quarter size is roughly right for an 10 – 14 year old. It depends a lot on the size of the child. Some children are small for their age, and some big for their age. It will help if you have them fitted before you buy.
Different types of guitar tuners
You get good clip on tuners, sometimes sold with the guitar. If you have a smartphone however, you get great apps. I have a guitar tuner app called Pitchlab Lite that works just fine for me. I also have a metronome app and they’re both free. For more on tuning, read my post How to tune a guitar for beginners.
You need an extra full set of strings. If one breaks, then you can replace that one, and again have a full set of strings. It is not difficult to replace a set of nylon strings, but I find steel strings difficult to replace. In such a case, you can ask your teacher to replace it, or go to a music store. They will be able to help. Or you can buy the service kit below.
You also need picks if you are going to use them.
